9/9/2023 0 Comments Folio society reddit![]() ![]() As I recently posted in another thread, the Society's founder, Charles Ede, stated that ”The Folio Society was founded in February 1947 ‘to produce editions of the world’s great literature in a format worthy of the contents, at a price within the reach of everyman’. I guess it depends how you define "Fine Press". I'd mention Tartarus Press as a small publisher of titles mostly in and around the field of fantasy, beautifully designed and quite well produced in limited editions at modest (well, standard Folio-ish) prices. My purchases tend to be old books, Folio books, old Folio books, or where there's no better alternative modern trade hardbacks. Some members here may be familiar with the work of today's true "fine presses" whose standard editions are priced at or well beyond the level of Folio Society LEs, others will know the hardback Penguin and Virago classic ranges and Slightly Foxed Editions. Much of my own is in lesser-known works from the 1890s and around the 1930s, and for those, the vast majority of which aren't likely to appear in new editions at all, I'm happy to seek out early printings. FSD members will vary widely, though, in the other publishers they favour, depending not least on the nature of their reading. My first port of call when there's no current Folio edition of a work I'm looking for is often a search for a second-hand one, and there have been several FS printings of Wuthering Heights that remain variously available. ![]() As Howard Devoto observed, "some will pay for what others pay to avoid" :-) I confess my own impression is unfavourable, to me even its current offerings have the air of books sold door to door in the 1950s to furnish the homes of non-readers. ![]() The Easton Press is perhaps the nearest thing to a competitor, but at a considerable distance and its books' aesthetic qualities divide opinions pretty sharply. It's odd perhaps, though I expect there are strong commercial reasons, that the Folio Society's long and successful existence seems to have spawned few if any upstart rivals: well, none that I'm aware of. ![]()
